Waterbed - A Definition

A waterbed or water mattress is a bed or mattress filled with water. That's it - plain and simple.

Health Information about Waterbeds

Waterbeds can be beneficial to your health. All of us have shuddered at the thought of those little dust mites feeding off our skin while we sleep. Yet today, millions of people still share their bed with these parasites. It does not matter how often we wash and shower, we all shed dead skin. It’s part of how the human body works. In a conventional mattress, these extremely tiny particles filter down through our sheets and into the inner layers of the mattress. That makes them totally inaccessible to any kind of cleaning procedures. Thorough vacuuming may remove some, but it is more like looking for a needle in a hay stack. Now comes the really worse part. The plentiful food supply and the humid environment in most mattresses provide the ideal breeding ground for microscopic parasites. Over time, these micro-organisms and human perspiration salts build up within the mattress fibers. So it isn’t really a surprise that many people suffer allergic reactions and asthma attacks in their own beds.

A waterbed can help to reduce these problems. It is pretty much impossible for any kind of dirt or dead skin particles to penetrate the waterbed mattress. Guess what – cleaning a waterbed really does work. Periodically cleaning a waterbed mattress with a cloth and vinyl cleaner removes dead skin and reduces the risk of parasites to find a breeding ground. The cover over the mattress can be regularly washed – thus virtually eliminating the incidence of the House Dust Mite in your bed.

A waterbed mattress can have a significant effect in inducing a good night’s sleep. In addition the soothing warmth and even support of tired muscles that the waterbed mattress provides is definitely therapeutic. With our body temperatures decreasing during sleep, using a conventional mattress without heat can even further reduce our body temperature. Heated blankets are insufficient (and pose a risk) as, unlike heated water mattresses, they can only provide heat to the top of the body.
